Tea Bags
It is not overstating matters to say that the humble tea bag has played a major role in the development of post-war Britain. It captures the essence of the search for convenience in the home that began in the 1950s and has continued to the present day.
The story of the teabag probably began in America towards the end of the 19th century, when Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, started sending out his samples in silk bags. The (probably apocryphal) story is that his customers assumed that he intended them to put the whole bag in the tea pot, and that it was in answer to their comments that he made the switch to a more permeable muslin bag. What is certain is that the idea had been launched - and it was going to capture the public imagination.
Immediately after the war, Joseph Tetley began experimenting with what was recognisably a tea bag. The company adapted a soup dispensing machine for teabag production and before long teabags were in commercial production. The other big tea companies, reluctant at first, soon saw that this was going to be a big hit, and followed suit.
And so the teabag was born, and so it continued until very recently. The Nineties saw the first pyramid (or tetrahedral) teabag, developed in huge secrecy, at huge cost - and with huge commercial success. Around the same time the Japanese developed a nylon tetrahedral bag for premium larger-leafed teas.
What has sometimes suffered, in the quest to produce tea bags at prices suitable for the supermarkets, is the quality of the tea. Whilst tea can brew quite adequately in a tea bag (though certainly not as well as from loose leaves), the matter is entirely dependent on the quality of the tea used.
So we are delighted to offer the following range of teabags, all made by our own fair hands using quality teas. We hope you enjoy them - and caterers, please get in touch for your wholesale prices.
