“Marvelous tea for hot summer days.”

Spearmint Teabags

Spearmint is common garden mint, Mentha spicata. Native to the Mediterranean, it became more widespread when the Romans took it with them as they conquered the known world.

Unfortunately for the Romans, potatoes had not yet been discovered so they were unable to enjoy that particular magical combination. Nor would they have found it easy to make Pimm’s with mint tea replacing some of the lemonade – another deliciously different combination.

But they would certainly have been aware of mint’s use in stews, soups and roasts, as well as its formidable medicinal reputation for diseases as diverse as stomach aches, chest pains, headaches and nervous complaints, and for relieving the itching caused by insect bites and allergies.

To brew, put one bag per person in a mug and add freshly-drawn boiling water. Allow 4 minutes for full infusion to occur, then strain into cups or mugs. Brew for 4 mins or to taste. Best enjoyed without milk.
