The common Stinging Nettle, Urtica dioica, has far more to offer than the occasional painful rash on your legs during a woodland walk.
Its traditional medicinal properties have been valued for centuries. Most importantly, Nettle Tea is delicious.
Nettles contain a number of important antihistamines, so nettle tea can be taken to ease the symptoms of hayfever, rashes and other allergic reactions, including the effects of insect bites.
Nettle tea is also often suggested for sufferers of arthritis and gout, as it helps to reduce levels of uric acid in the body. It is also excellent for detoxifying the body and as a general tonic – great if you have a hangover!
Nettles contain high quantities of iron and vitamins and are often recommended in cases of anaemia, and as a natural dietary supplement.
To brew, place one heaped teaspoon of Nettle per person into a warmed pot or Mug Infuser and add fresh boiling water. Allow to steep for 5 minutes (or longer if preferred), then strain into mugs.
If you love Nettle Tea, you may also enjoy Dandelion Tea.
