“A full, coloury tea with some sweetness and a hint of smoke.”

China Pi Luo Chun Black

Pi Luo Chun (or Bi Luo Chun) was given its name by one of the ancient Emperors of China.

He saw its unusual leaf, twisted into a tight coil, and its remarkable mixture of colours – a very dark green, almost black, on the one hand and a pale, delicate tan on the other, and promptly re-named it.  The name translates as “Spring Snail” as the leaf is supposed to resemble the shell of these tiny creatures.

The tea is made from fine leaves produced in the Yunnan Province of South China, perhaps the area of China most associated with high-quality black teas.  Pi Luo Chun is unique among black teas for its remarkable, twisted, almost sculpted leaf.

Once brewed, this unusually rich tea is full of colour with some sweetness and a hint of smoke.  The tea – unusually for fine China teas – has enough body to take a little milk if desired.

To brew, place one tsp per person into a warmed pot or Mug Infuser and add fresh boiling water.  Allow to brew for 3 minutes.  A little milk and sugar may be added if desired.
