Newburgh is a bright, full-flavoured single-estate Ceylon. Usually drunk with a small amount of milk, it can be enjoyed at any time of day. Its refreshing and thirst-quenching character makes it ideal for the afternoon.
On the Eastern slopes of Sri Lanka's central mountain area, tumbling haphazardly down from Nuwara Eliya's high wooded plateau, lies the famous tea-growing region of Uva. These are high-grown teas, at elevations of between 3000 and 5000 feet, and of comparable quality to those of Dimbula to the West, but often with a very particular character known as "wintergreen". This can be an acquired taste but it quickly becomes quite addictive! For many, the Uva Ceylons - flavoury, rich, positive teas whose character comes from pure flavour rather than brute strength - are the perfect afternoon teas.
Newburgh Estate extends to some 495 acres at an elevation of 3600 feet near Badulla in the Buda Usulawa district of Uva. The care and dedication which the estate staff lavish on their teas is evident from the leaf to the cup. This is a BOP1 tea (Broken Orange Pekoe) but in fact it is a rather large leaf that formerly would have been graded as Pekoe. It is a fine, beautiful leaf, full of quality and colour. The liquor it produces is aromatic, sweet, supple and a bright amber in colour.
To enjoy at its best brew with fresh boiling water using one teaspoon per person. We always recommend soft water if possible but with many of these Ceylons this is even more important. Allow 4 minutes for infusion then pour, removing the leaves at this point if using a teapot with an integral filter.
If you love Newburgh Single Estate we think you would also like our Darjeeling and Assam blend for your breakfast as it has a similar bright quality with plenty of flavour. Of the other Ceylons, you would almost certainly enjoy the Holyrood.
